Prof. Michael Shechter, born in Israel in 1954, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1979, doing his residency in internal medicine and cardiology at Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel. Since 1991 he is a Senior Cardiologist at the Leviev Heart Center of that hospital and from 2019 a Full Professor of Cardiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. Prof. Shechter, who received Master of Art cum laude from the Tel Aviv University in 1992, is a member in many prestigious professional societies such as the Israel Heart Society (IHS), American College of Cardiology (ACC), European Society of Cardiology (ESC), American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Nutrition (ACN). Prof. Shechter was a Save A Heart Foundation Research Fellow and Research Scientist in the Prevention and Rehabilitation Cardiac Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of Los Angeles during the years 1995-1998 and completed subspecialty training in cardiac lipidology, cardiac rehabilitation, platelet function and endothelial function assessment. Since 1999 Prof. Shechter directs the Endothelial Function Service at the Sheba Medical Center, as well as being Director of the Clinical Research Unit. Prof. Shechter is a world expert in the field of magnesium in coronary artery disease. He received the 2003 Annual Award of the ACN in recognition of his excellence in magnesium research and his contribution to understanding the role of magnesium in human physiology, and the 2010 Annual Meltzer Prize from the IHS and the Friends of the IHS for Important Contribution in Research of Endothelial Function in Israel. During 2010 -2014 Prof. Shechter was the Secretary of the ACC Israel Chapter; and during 2013-2017 the Chairman of the IHS WG on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy. During 2016-2020 Prof. Shechter was elected as ESC Nucleus Member WG on Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology. During 2019-2023 Prof. Shechter was Chairman of the IHS WG on Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Prevention and a Board Member, Israel Medical Association, Society for Research, Prevention and Treatment of Atherosclerosis. In 2023 he received the Doctor of the Century prize from the Transcaucasian Doctors’ League, Tbilisi, Georgia.
